Turkey has opened negotiations with Israeli Military Industries to refit its fleet of M60 tanks. The Israeli plan is to fit the turret of a US M1A1 onto the old M60 hull, providing increased protection and firepower. The US is now campaigning for the Turks to leave Israel out of the deal and have US contractors perform the conversions. The US has also offered to lease the Turks some M1A1s so their troops can train on the new turret systems.--Stephen V Cole
