The Global Hawk that crashed in Pakistan (the third to crash; only six have been built) experienced an engine failure over Afghanistan (possibly lost turbine blades) and was put into a glide to an emergency landing field in Pakistan. Unfortunately, the aircraft either had no information in its databank on a particular ridge that crossed the flight path (or the data was wrong) and the aircraft slammed into the ridge, destroying the only electro-optical sensor package for use by Global Hawks.
