The US Air Force Association has been forced to ask Congress to extend the deadline for raising money for an Air Force memorial in Washington. The huge Air Force structure would dwarf the nearby Marine (Iwo Jima) Memorial, and the Marines have raised such a firestorm of controversy that the Air Force is still $5.5 million short of the needed funding. The Marines, who are fighting their battle in corporate boardrooms to block major donations, are determined to see the Air Force move to another location or at least scale-down their metal monolith to realistic proportions.--Stephen V Cole
