While goggles for all the infantry seemed like a good idea, especially in a dusty place like Iraq, it hasnt exactly worked out as planned. Iraq is a hot place, and troops moving around in combat work up a sweat. This means there is often fogging inside the goggles. This is not a good thing when you are in the middle of a firefight. So many troops have bought, with their own money, high end (up to a hundred dollars a pair), outdoorsmen sunglasses. These are usually bought by fishermen and hunters. These sunglasses have shatterproof lenses and are designed to stay on when the user is moving around a lot. The lenses are also polarized, a very useful feature in sunny Iraq. The troops are agitating to have these sunglasses issued, and given the increased political power of email equipped troops, they have already gotten their way in the army, while the marines are still hammering the brass on the subject.
