September 3, 2010: In the last year, Yemen received over $150 million from the United States, to improve their military capabilities. In the previous 12 months, the U.S. provided $67 million. Yemen is battling Iran-backed Shia rebels in the north, and hundreds of al Qaeda terrorists in the south. Some of the southern tribes are also hostile to the government, demanding more money and autonomy.

Most of the U.S. aid paid for refurbishing ten Russian Mi-17 transport helicopters, and to purchase four American UH-1 type helicopters. The aid also included fifty hummers, night vision goggles, radios and other gear for Yemeni commando units (who are leading the fight against al Qaeda.)

The U.S. has also provided training for Yemeni commando units, as well as intelligence (from satellites, recon aircraft and electronic intercepts). American warships off the coast have also helped intercept Iranian arms shipments to the northern rebels.
