Islamic rebels used a roadblock to stop vehicles carrying young men to a soccer match 70 kilometers to the north, in the capital. The rebels killed 16 of their victims with gunfire, cutting their throats or burning them to death. This is the first major rebel massacre in a year. Army and police units were in the area, searching for rebels.
