The MILF has openly pledged to not provide any assistance to Abu Sayyaf. The MILF has said it has never intended to assist Abu Sayyaf, but communications problems and local conditions may have led to MILF fighters appearing to get in the way of army searches for the Abu Sayyaf. The MILF has long viewed Abu Sayyaf as hostile rivals and unreliable.
