Thousands fled their homes as heavy fighting between Hutu rebels and the army continued for a second day in southern neighborhoods of Bujumbura. Both sides exchanged fire with mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles. An unidentified army officer saw more than 50 corpses. The army announced that it had killed 15 rebels and driven the rest out of the city, although the rebels counted only six dead and 17 others injured. The army was reported to still be shelling FNL positions southeast of Bujumbura. - Adam Geibel
